Overview

The Makalu region is located in eastern Nepal, close to the Tibetan border. One of the Sherpa community’s less traveled trekking routes is this particular one.

This trek route passes through the Makalu Barun National Park, a conservation area known for its rich biodiversity. It is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including numerous species of orchids, rhododendron, and wildlife such as red pandas, Himalayan tahr, and numerous bird species. As you pass through this region, you will also be treated to stunning views of snow-capped peaks, including the world’s fifth-highest mountain, Mount Everest. The terrain of Makalu, which rises to 8485 meters (27838 feet), is diverse, ranging from alpine meadows to lush lowland forests.

Shiva Dhara is a very special side trip option that is well-known for its scenic beauty and cultural value from its historical Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimages. The focal point of Shiva Dhara is a waterfall that is revered as Lord Shiva’s most sacred tap. A massive 500-foot-tall waterfall is fed by a sinkhole on the face of a huge stone bluff.

Itinerary

After arriving at the airport in Kathmandu via your chosen airline, you will be greeted warmly by our staff or guide and taken to a hotel located in the center of the city.
Take a 30-35-minute early-morning flight to Tumlingtar, then drive for two hours to arrive at your first day's destination, Num.

Trekking through terraced fields, small village settlements, the Arun River, and up to Seduwa should start at this point.
Walking hours of ascent and descent could make it difficult.

Reaching Tashi Gaun, a Sherpa community, requires traveling through the Makalu Barun National Park and taking in the scenery, especially the stunning, varicolored rhododendron and bamboo forests.

You may reach Kongma via hiking through ascending alpine meadows, crossing multiple passes, and taking in the expansive views of Makalu and Chamlang.

It's crucial to allow yourself a day to acclimate, therefore today will consist of a quick hike and exploration of the nearby Khongma and adequate rest before continuing your adventure.

You're physically and emotionally prepared for further trekking after acclimatization and relaxation, so start today by taking in the breathtaking panorama of Mount Makalu and surrounding peaks before descending to Dho Bato.

Yangla Kharka can be reached by hiking through a thick forest, a grazing region, and over a few small rivers. (You will also have the opportunity to take a side journey to the spiritual site of Shiv Dhara from Yangla Kharka.)

Reach Yangla Kharka by ascending through alpine meadows and taking in the amazing view of Mount Baruntse and Mount Makalu.

After eight days of trekking, you will finally arrive at Makalu Base Camp, where you may marvel at the up-close view of Mt. Makalu and other peaks while surrounded by towering peaks. Admiring the stunning dawn and sunset views from Makalu Base Camp.

Trekking via a glacier and through a rock-filled area to reach the actual Makalu Expedition Base Camp. After admiring Mount Everest up close and taking in views of Nuptse, Cho Oyu, Baruntse, and several other peaks, gradually descend to the hiking base camp where you will spend the night.

Trek downhill, retracing the same path while taking in expansive vistas, gradually departing from breathtaking Mountain View, and descending to Tadosha

Continue your trip downhill, since you will be losing more altitude than you did the day before. Regularly travel in a long, hilly, beautiful landscape, taking in the scenery and lifestyle of Dho Bato

Trekking up and down, fitter than before, and full of priceless memories as you walk down the Barun River to enjoy it.

Continue descending down the same path, taking in more human settlements, witnessing local way of life, culture, and customs, and engaging in conversation with locals once you get in Seduwa.

After arriving at Chamling Kharka, you will walk downward in less time than before for around two hours. It will take you about three hours to drive to Tumlingtar and rest.
